A familiar face – Heat Wave

My painting Contemplation has proved to be a popular portrait this year. Earlier in the summer it was included in 500 Portraits published by National Portrait Gallery and it was around the same time that I was approached by Penguin for it to be used as the cover image for Heat Wave by Penelope Lively (published by Penguin Modern Classics).

It now seems rather strange to think of one of my paintings circulating in a different world, away from the usual art circles. I don’t know how I’ll feel if I see someone reading it on the tube!

Beth, who sat for this painting has continued to model regularly for me since it was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery. She writes an interesting and touching piece about her feelings on seeing herself as ‘cover girl’ as well as her experiences during the process of sitting for a portrait.
