Dear Adele, this is a subtle, beautiful painting. I particularly like how you have modulated and varied the colours, in the hair for example. Do you have a way of organising the colours across the painting – for example do you set the main ones out on the palette before you start? Do you organise them according to simultaneous contrast? Best wishes Anne

    • Dear Anne, many thanks for your feedback. Many of the colours are mixed on the palette before I start. I’m not consciously organising them according to simultaneous contrast, the palette is influenced by a portrait that I’ve been looking at recently.
hoping that your work is going well, with best wishes

That’s interesting, I’m surprised you’re not consciously using simultaneous contrast, as the opposite colours work so well in your painting. The green behind the lady’s shoulders makes the pink in her cheeks stand out, and the touch of warm ochre up on the top left of her forehead makes the blues in her hair look great. I’m learning from looking at your painting.

      • many thanks Anne. So much of the colour mixing is so instinctive, and just happens to be so well placed within the composition. Thanks for your feedback. I hope that your painting is going well. I’ve been meaning to get in touch to say thank you so much for the lovely card you gave me at the pv. It was very kind of you, a lovely thought.
